WRECK OF PROGRESS.

LITTLE LEFT OF THE HULL. BODIES RECOVERED. WELLINGTON, May 2. Little now remains of the coastal steamer Progress, which was wrecked to the westward of Ohiro Bay yesterday. The heavy seas continued during the afternoon and evening, and to-day the debris of the wrecked steamer is scattered along a wide area of coast line,

The bodies of the drowned were all recovered yesterday afternoon, the last found h&ing that of the chief engineer, which came ashore shortly before 4 o’clock. To-day, the scene of the wreck was visited by a large number of people, and comment was freely passed on the tragedy that the little ship had not weathered the rocks on which she foundered and reached the comparatively safe beach in Ohiro Bay*. Considering the nature of the coastline at the scene of the disaster, it is to be wondered at that there were not more casualties. But even so there was a more dangerous landing-place on the other side of the bay, and had the Progress been driven on to the rocks there it might have been almost impossible to bring any of the crew ashore alive.

The bodies of three of the victims of the tragedy—Frank Lawton, Thomas Simpson and William -Finch—will be buried at the Karori Cemetery on Monday. The remains of William Winton, the other victim, are to 'be interred at Dunedin, and will be taken South by the Maori to-night.—(P.A.)
