The King was unable to attftid the memorial service to Lord Stemfordham, who was His Majesty’s Private Secretary, in Windsor Castle on Sunday, a London cablegram states. Mr. Clive Wigham succeeds Lord Stamf ordham. Archbishop Redwood will celebrate his ninety-second birthday on Wednesday. He is in very good health and still actively interested in everything that concerns episcopal effort in this country.—(P.A.) The engagement is announced of Dorothy Alice Maude, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs W. J. Murray, of Herne Bay, Auckland, to Jack Kent, elder son of Mr. and Mrs F. J. Hunn, of Masterton. The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs Sarah Alice Allen, relict of the late Mr. George Frederic Allen, in her 88th year. The late Mrs Allen had resided for 63 years in New Zealand, having been a pioneer of the Invercargill district. She had lived in Masterton about six years. Her husband predeceased her two years ago. She leaves the following family: Mesdames H. Roff (Masterton), Kennedy (Queenstown;, W. Aitken (Masterton) and More (Hinuera) and Mr. Arthur Nickless (Southland). Mrs Allen died at the residence of her son-in-law (Mr. W. Aitken, Opaki Road). The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the relatives in their sad bereavement. The funeral, which was private, took plaee yesterday. The death occurred at the residence, Palmerston North, on Saturday last or Air. John Wakeham, formerly of Masterton. The late Mr. Wakekam was torn in Dcvoiujkire S 3 year* ago and at the age of two years came out with his parents to New Zealand. They landed at Nelson and shortly afterwards proceeded to Wainuiomata, where they engaged in farming pursuits. The deceased gentleman took a keen interest in civic affairs, being 33 yean'd member of the Hutt County Council, twice on the Petone Council, and was 2 member of the Wellington Charitable Aid Board and Tai Fai Cemetery Board. He was a devoted member ci the Methodist Church occupying all the positions in that church open to laymen. He retired at the age of 55 years, making his home in Petone removing later to Masterton and thence to Palmerston North. He leaves a widow and only daughter'(Mrs A. Weller, of Lansdowne, Masterton) who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sadc bereavement.
