Reports that a hundred and sixty men were killed in an explosion on the Sunday Creek Coal Company’s mine, near Athens, were received on Wednesday night by Governor Myers Cooper. A terrific explosion was followed by fire. TWENTY-SIX RESCUED. DEAD INCLUDE COMPANY OFFICIALS. (Received Thursday. 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 5. . News from Columbus states that officials of the Sunday Creek Coal Company on Wednesday night announced that twenty-six men had been rescued alive from the Number 6 mine, near Millfield, where an explosion entombed 160 men. Six of the rescued are in a serious condition from gas. Twenty others are alive in the workings and are to be brought out later. Seventeen bodies have been recovered. The president and vice-president of the company were on a tour of inspection at the time of the explosion and arft thought to be dead.
