CRASH IN FOG.
DESTRUCTION OF IMPERIAL AIR LINER. PASSENGER & TWO MECHANICS DEAD. SURVIVORS BADLY INJURED. BOULOGNE, October 30. The twin-engined Imperial Airways air liner City of Washington, flying from Paris for Croydon, was near the coast when the engine went out of action. The pilot struggled on with the other engine seeking a He encountered fog, and a wing crashed on the hillside. The ’plane turned over and was completely destroyed, but did not take fire. The accident was not discovered for for two hours, when farm labourers going to work from dinner found a passoiiger, Mr. 8. A. Tomkins, of Manchester, who despite a terrible injured leg (since amputated) had crawled nearly a mile shouting for help. He was almost exhausted, but managed to explain the whereabouts of the crash. The rescuers found the rcmain’der of the victims still in the wreck, an American passenger and mechanic dead. Another mechanic died after being, lifted out. The other survivors are seriously injured. This is tho Imperial Airways second Channel service fatal crash. They had previously carried 150,000 passengers in five years|.five million miles with only one fatal crash, when the City of Ottawa came down in the Channel. According to another message, the crash took plaee in dense fog ten miles from Boulogne. One passenger and two employees of the Imperial Airways Company were killed, and three other passengers seriously injpred. The cause of the engine failure is not' known.
