DECISIVE WIN.

WAIRARAPA RUGBY REPS. OUTCLASS BUSH. FORWARD GAME AT CABTEBTON YESTERDAY. FULLER NOTCHES 18 POINTS. Displaying superior speed, tactics and combination the Wairarapa Rugby representatives outclassed the Bush Districts at the Carterton Showgrounds yesterday afternoon to the tune of 36 points to 12. Though the weather conditions—steady rain fell for the W greater part of the game—were not conductive to bright football, the play was fast and interesting. The visiting forwards, using spoiling tactics with effect, were successful in breaking up the Wairarapa rearguard movements in the first spell, the score at half time being 13/5. In the second session, however, the home side, obtaining more of the ball, soon gained the ascendancy and rattled on 28 points in quick time.

Both teams underwent several changes. In th'6 Wairarapa team Harvey, S. Willoughby, W. Reside and P. Jury were replaced by S. Reid, M. Parker, J. Le Quesne and Denby, while Brown, iSkelton and Olivant replaced Udy, Smith and Harris in the Bush team. Corkill and Fuller were the pick of the home backs, the latter notching eighteen points. In the forwards Le Quesne and Walker were always prominent. For Bush, McCarthy played an outstanding game at half and Mahoney and Gerrard got through & lot of work in the pack. A SPLENDID GOAL. Within three minutes of opening, Wairarapa were five points up. Corkill secured in the Bush 25, left the opposing backs standing with a fine cut-in, and handed on to McGregor to Fairbrother, who touched down near the posts. Fuller converted. Parker headed a dangerous rush to the Red line, the Bush forwards, however, packed round and cleared to half way. Wairarapa was opening out well but faulty handling and offside play nullified several promising moves. Desultory play in midfield was the order for a time, McGregor eventually brightening matters with a fine solo effort which took play well into the Red territory. The Bush forwards, headed by Mahoney ’and Galvin, came away well and Wairarapa were hard pressed for a time. Stringfellow brought timely relief by intercepting a loose pass. He cut clean through and was only pulled down by Woolland, who came across fast, when right on the line. Reeves returned play to midfield, where Wairarapa were awarded a penalty. Fuller landed a splendid goal from just inside the half-way mark. Bush replied with a fine rush to the Green line Corkill, however, cleared the danger zone with a hefty kick. The Greens gained further ground per medium, of judicious line-kicks until, from a line-out near the Red line, Le Quesne secured and dived across. Fuller goaled from well out. Wairarapa kept up the pressure but the Bush forwards, playing splendidly, broke away and transferred play to the Green Ene where from a forward melee, McCarthy ’snapped up and dived' across. Olivant converted. Half time sounded shortly afterwards with the score—Wairarapa 13, Bush 5.

SNAPPY SCORING. Wairarapa opened the second spell well. Fuller, securing on the wing, side-stepped his way through the opposition and, when blocked, centred to a bunch of forwards. Le Quesne went through with the ball at toe to cap a fine move by scoring between the posts. Fuller converted. Bush took a turn at attack and pressed hotly for a time. Roach cleared, the hall going to Reeves, who potted a neat goal. Mill initiated a move which ended at the Red line. The Buslf defence was proving sound and for a time the home team were kept at Bay. From a scrum in the Bush territory Hart handed to Mill, to Corkill, to Stringfellow, to Denby who reverse-passed to Corkill when across the line. Corkill touched down behind the. posts. It was a bright move. Play improyed and Mill initiated a move that ended in Donald crossing. Fuller converted. Wairarapa continued to attack and Donald and Le Quesne were both almost across. A' bright back rush, which left the Bush backs standing, saw Stringfellow score between the posts. Fuller converted. A minute later Fuller secured in his own 25 and dummied end sidestepped clean through the opposition to score a great try after a 75 yards, run. It was a brilliant effort. The same player narrowly missed the kick from the side-line. Olivant put the Reds on attack with a good kick and, from an ensuing scramble, Mabey scored. Mahoney missed the kick. No-side sounded shortly afterwards with the score: Wairarapa, 36; Bush, 12. Mr. J. Blake controlled the game. SPECTACULAR PLAY. OTAGO BEATS HAWKE’S BAY. DUNEDIN, August 13. Otago beat Hawke’s Bay to-day by 17 points to 11 in a game which provided some spectacular play. For Otargo, Bradanoviteh scored three tries and Lucy one, Lindsay kicking a penalty and converting one. For the visitors Roach and Campbell scored, Evans converting one and Grenside kicking a penalty.—(P.A.) AN EASY WIN. MANAWA TU BEAT HOROWHENUA PALMERSTON N., August 13.
