AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT NORTHAMPTON.

GOOD OPENING SCORES FOR HOME SIDE.

RAIN INTERFERES WITH PLAY. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.* LONDON, August 9. The Australians commenced, a match against Northamptonshire, at Northampton in the presence of 10,000 spectators. Grimmett and McCabe stood out of the visiting team, but Bradman was included. Northampton won the toss and batted on a hard wicket, though light rain began to fall as soon as play commenced. Play was stopped for a time, and though conditions up to lunch were miserable, the opening batsmen offered unexpected resistance, Bakewell and Timms registering 162 of the total score. The former, who is regarded by many as a. successor to Hobbs, betted for 175 minutes, hit eight 4’s and? was caught when he attempted a drive, but failed to make a complete contact. Jackson, running in, made a fine catch low down. Timms went on cautiously, but eventually gave an easy catch to Richardson when trying a cover drive. He hit eleven 4’s and gave a chanceless display. Jupp (I's) was enterprising until he was snapped up by Walker behind the wickets and Matthews (19) played a serviceable innings. The Australians missed Grimmett. Their fielding was patchy, with the exception of Bradman, who was brilliant. Hornibrook finished with the excellent bowling average of four for 45 Northamptonshire’s first innings closed for 249 (Bakewell 84, Timms 78). POOR GATES. RESULT OF UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER. It is understood that the receipts of the Australian eleven’s tour do not equal expectations, largely owing to unfavourable weather spoiling a number of the county matches. The financial results of the test were satisfactory and a record crowd is expected at the Oval for the final test. A GREAT BAT. HOBBS BEATS W. G. GRACE’S RECORD.
