RAILWAY ECONOMIES.

SAVINGS ON MARLBOROUGH LINE. (By Telegraph.—“ The Age" Special.) WELLINGTON, August 4. A further instalment of railways savings is announced by the Hon. W. A. Veitch, Minister of Railways. It has been decided to modify the services on the Picton-Wharanui section somewhat drastically, curtailing the train-running with thp object of effecting an annual saving of about £4OOO. The new timetable will provide ample facilities for goods traffic and allowance is being made for special trains during periods of peak traffic. It is proposed to withdraw the station staff from the Ward Station. Passenger traffic between Pieton and Blenheim has been seriously reduced through opposition road services and it is anticipated that no further serious loss can accrue, though even if there is a further decline, the estimated saving—£4ooo—would still be effected. A summary of revenue and expenditure for this section for the year ended March 31, 1930, shows a loss on working of £8389 and a loss, including interest, of £36,913. The curtailed services are to be operated forthwith.
