COUNTY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Wairarap'a South County Council was held at Carterton on Saturday, there being present Councillors T. V. Moore (chairnnan), C. Reid, F. Court, D. McGregor, A. Boss, C. A. Cameron, and B. Cooper. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the general account of £7707 18s lid, of which sum £2OOO was on fixed deposit. The loans account was in credit £684 6s 9d. Receipts since last meeting wore £4411 Is 9d, of which £382-5 16s Id was tor rates, and £398 12s 5d for highway maintenance. Accounts amounting to £2566 3s were passed for payment. The ranger reported having dealt with 36 head of stock during the month. The engineer reported that final arrangements for widening Flat Point road under- the employment subsidy conditions had been completed, and drawings and specifications for various culverts lodged with the Public Works Department. The Carrington water race overseer reported having carried out general cleaning. The Taratahi water race overseer reported four small floods in the river, and the intake cleaned out. General maintenance had been carried out. On Monday repairs to the pipes on Gladstone Road will be taking place, and the Kokotau and Woodlands races will be cut off until Tuesday night. The overseer reported that he expected to make a start with the work on the Hururua Road next week. A start has been made by the unemployment relief gang with the taking off of points on Flat Point Road. The widening at the Kourarau on the East Coast Road has been completed. The footpath has nearly been completed on the Main Road north at Clareville. ’he pile driving for the now abutment to the Gladstone Bridge will be finished on Monday. Willows that are blocking culverts on'Brooklyn and Victoria roads are to be dragged out. It was decided to make a grant of £2O to the Carterton Public Library. Further protection work is to be ear- | ried out at the Matarawa Bridge. The overseer was given authority to have covers procured for the two tractors.
