CRICKET TEST.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST INNINGS CLOSES FOR 345. FIVE OF ENGLAND’S STARS GONE FOR 221. DESTRUCTIVE BOWLING BY WALL (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 26. The second day’s play provided some thrills in the cricket test, the Australians’ first innings closing with a handy 345, to which Fairfax and Grimmett contributed 87. England has five wickets down for 221, including all her stalwarts. A feature was Wall’s bowling. He accounted for Hobbs, Sutcliffe and Hammond. His figures are three wickets for 61. The weather was gloomy when play was recommenced, in the presence of 35,000.

Owing to the bad light, the scoring was slow, but the batsmen kept up a sound defence, being satisfied to get occasional singles. When the light improved, Grimmett rattled on runs for Australia in great style. Goddard got Fairfax in his second over after replacing Hammond, with, a leg decision. Goddard had another success in the next over, when Duleepsinhji caught Hornibrook. The Australian innings, which lasted 420 minutes, closed at 12.35 with a satisfactory total, thanks to a valuable stand by Fairfax and Grimmett. England commenced on a batsmen’s wicket with bright sun and a light breeze. Hobbs was struck painfully by Wall’s fifth ball, but was able to resume, playing out quietly until lunch. After lunch. Wall, bowling well, made the balls swing across. Hobbs was obviously unhappy. Sutcliffe, however, was more confident. At 55, Hobbs had only contributed 12. Sutcliffe received a nasty crack on the arm from Fairfax and play was held up for some time. The partnership bagged a hundred, then both Hobbs and Sutcliffe were out within a few minutes. Hammond and Duleepsinhji started nicely, but Wall soon got' Hammond, while Duleepsinhji gave .a-delightful exhibition. Chapman was in and out quickly. Leyland batted brightly for his runs and was in with Tate when stumps were drawn. Following are the scores:—
