SCHOOL CONTESTS.
BASKETBALL AND RUGBY. .VISITORS FROM HUTT. A basketball team and ia Rugby fifteen representing the Hutt Central School visited Masterton on Friday last. On Saturday morning they played matches against the Masterton West -School at the school grounds. The visitors were billeted by the local pupils and all spent a most enjoyable time. They returned home on Saturday afternoon.
The basketball match was very closely contested and resulted in a win for Masterton by 8 goals to 7; In the first spell West, through good control, established a lead, but in the second half the visitors played well and had the home team working haa’d to avert a defeat. A feature of Hutt’-s second half was the fine goal throwing. In the first half of the Rugby match the home team had most of the play, but lost one or two good scoring opportunities. Hutt was very hard pressed, and had to force on several occasions. One of the visitors' few excursions into West territory provided Winnie, of Hutt, to score a try behind the posts. He converted. The score at half-time was 5 to nil in favour of Hutt. In the second half West again dominated play, the forwards doing particularly hard work. Hutt were hard pressed, and only good line-kick-ing saved them. After a period of good work, Welch dived over and opened West’s score. The try was not converted. The game ended in Hutt’s favour by 5 points to 3. R. Foster, of West, was hurt and had -to leave the field. Mr. Darvill was referee. The visitors were entertained at the West School after the matches.
