In the Supreme Court at New Plymouth yesterday morning, Constable Samuel Small was awarded £l3O 8s 6d damages 'against George Henry Fletcher for negligent driving of a car. The constable was riding a -motor-cycle, and it was stated that Fletcher cut a corner too close.—(PA.) For frequenting a public thoroughfare for the purposes of .betting, Herbert Reuben Moore was fined £4O and William. Gordon Robertson £3O, by Mr Mowlem, S.M., at. Hastings yesterday. The hearing of -similar charges against William Dow and Henry Gardiner was held over until next Wednesday, bail being fixed in each case at £lOO eelf and. surety £L-'iO.—(PA.)

Rumours that members of the British Rugby team snubbed Porter, captain of the Wellington team after the match on Tuesday are emphatically denied by Porter, reports -a Wellington Press Association.-.message. He sayf that the feelings between the Wellington team and the British were most eoldial and he was warmly congratulated by the tourists on his side's win.

Five persons, occupants of a motortruck, had a narrow escape from serious injury, if riot death, when the track overturned on the Lake ColeRoad on Tuesday. Two of the occupants, Miss E. Chinney and Frank Keech, were taken to the Christchurch Hospital -suffering from injuries and shock. Had the truck .rolled a few feet further, it would have toppled over a 300-foot bank.—(PA.) Addressing farmers at the Winter Show yesterday, Mr. L. J. Wild, of Feilding, indulged in one or two jesting jibes at fanners. 4 ‘Farmers in my experience," he observed, are the greatest theorists in the world. They have a theory for everything, except the fall in the price of wool—they can't explain that." \Later, Mr. Wild said that it was much pleasanter than it used to be to address farmers. They used to be out to "gag” and to ask puzzling questions. As an instance, he mentioned the experience of a. youngster not long out of college who was invited to address a body of farmers. One old farmer asked the young lecturer what he would do if he had a horse that slobbered. The reply promptly given was: "I should teach him to spit."
