HOPWOOD’S DAY.

AUSTRALIAN BATSMEN ROUTED. INNINGS YIELDS 115. INTERESTING FINISH LIKELY. United Press association. —By Eleotri® Telerrranh —Conyright. LONDON, May 15. When play was resumed after lunch in the Australia-Lancashire match, Hopwood completed the rout of the Australian batsmen after Kippax and Fairfax had made an attempt to stem the collapse. Kippax was undefeated and Fairfax again showed his value as a defensive batsman.

McDonald was slower to-day and batsmen were very careful. Five successive maidens were howled. However, with Fairfax’s dismissal, Hopwood soon got rid of the tail-endere. Lancashire opened sensationally, Hallows going in the first over. Hornibrook, bowling with great effect into the wind, completely tied up the batsmen and after yorking Watson, had two others caught. Five wickets were down for 70. Then Paynter and Eckersley became associated and carried the score past the century and were together when stumps were drawn, leaving the game in an interesting position.

LANCASHIRE EIGHT WICKETS DOWN FOR 133. (Received This Day, 0.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 16. The cricket match was resumed in warm sunshine and a strong breeze. Grimmett’s fingers are sore from spinning the ball. The prospect of an interesting finish attracted two thousand people. Eckersley was again confident. Paynter hit one back to Fairfax in the second over, the bowler falling in taking a good catch. Grimmett again puzzled Eckersley, but the Lancashire captain resolutely kept his foot in the crease.
