BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. PARK IMPROVEMENTS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan), and Councillors A D. Low, H. M. Peacock, A. Rippon, W. White, T. E. Jenkins, W. L. Free, Trevor Beetham, W. H. Saunders, H. J. O’Leary, C. H. Anderson. An apology for absence was received from Councillor J. L. Murray. In the absence of the Town Clerk (Mr. T. T. Denbee) through illness, the business of the Council was taken by Mr. D. T. Herbert. An application froriT the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the remission of hall rent was granted. The Girl Guides’ Association was granted the free use of the hall on August 7 and 8, but the council was unable to write off arrears of rent. The Park Committee, having examined the alternative plan forwarded by the Beautifying Society for park improvements, reported that it did not see its way to make any alteration to the original decision. The matter of grazing sheep in South Park was left in the hands of Councillor Peacock and the Beautifying Society. Councillors O’Leary and Murray were asked to bring down a report on the clearing up of the cemetery grounds. A tender for the supply of a motor mower at £l3O was accepted. The Engineer was instructed to bring down a report on the matter of effecting repairs to the track leading to the Lansdowne Suspension Bridge. The Abattoir Committee recommended that tenders be called for an electric hoist at the abattoir and the engineer be instructed to draw up specifications. sum of £l5OO from the Gas Working Account is to be placed on fixed deposit at a bank for three months. A coke elevator, as recommended by the Gas Engineer, is to be installed at the gasworks. A complaint was received from a Hall Street resident regarding a parking place for cars. The traffic inspector is to bo instructed to endeavour to alleviate the trouble. The Wairarapa Progress League wrote regarding validating the council’s contribution towards its funds. The Mayor was appointed the council’s- delegate to attend a conference arranged by the Progress League to consider the matter of the distribution of auctioneers’ license fees. He* was given a free hand. A letter from the Masterton County Council drawing attention to the state of boundary roads was **received.” A complaint from a Donald Street resident regarding the state of that street was received. He is to be informed that the council has no money available on this year’s estimates for the work. The Dangerous Goods Inspector advised that all fees for dangerous goods licenses had been collected. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that a cheque for one auctioneers’ license fee had been forwarded to the council. A letter from the Borough Solicitor enclosing a copy of the clause in connection with the validating o2 Mr. Kjar’s lease was received. The Borough Solicitor wrote regarding auctioneers’ license fees, the letter being received. The tender of £365 for the supply of a motor roller was accepted. The following increases in salary are to be given effect to as from August 21: Miss Exell, £lB per annum; Miss Burcher, 5s per week; €. C. Johansen, 10s.per week. Final notice is to bo sent to two firms who are in arreas with bowser license fees, giving them seven days in which to pay, otherwise the council will take steps to have the bowsers in question removed.
