The gate takings at the WairarapaManawhenua football match on Satur day were £240 ss.

The Whareama School Committee held a successful evening in the Langdale Hall on Saturday in aid of the Masterton Dental Clinic. A sum of £l2 was raised for the country schools’ fund of the Clipic.

The Masterton Fruitgrowers’ Association has made a donation of £1 to the Wairarapa Small Holdings’ Association as a small token of appreciation of the efforts of the latter in connection with fireblight. Mr. W. A. Irons, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Control Board will address a meeting of farmers on matters of importance to the industry, at Carterton, on Friday next at 1.30 p.m.

The secretary of the Wellington Automobile Association (Mr. H. J. Stott) advises that the Akatarawa Road was blocked by a big slip on Sunday and will not be open for traffic for about three days. Talkie pictures, which hitherto have been almost confined to main centres, are now penetrating to the smaller country towns by means of a travelling plant. Last Saturday night talkies were screened in Eketahuna.

In the Auckland Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Justices, George William »Sharrock, a porter at the Erua Bailway Station, was convicted and fined £5 and costs on a. change of delivering a letter to a prisoner at Erua on August 5. —(P A.) The Railway Hotel at Turakina was gutted by fire between 5 and 6 o ’clock yesterday morning. The occupants had a narrow escape. A bucket brigade did .good work, but the task was hopeless from the outset. Particulars of insurance are not available.—(P.A.)

A choice array of country produce will be on sale on Wednesday in the shop next to Hendry and Cooke, Queen Street, when a shop day is being held in aid of the country schools’ fund for the Masterton Dental Clinic.

The shop day to be held on Wednesday by the Old Girls’ Hockey Club has been postponed until Friday. The sale will take place in Ball Bros.’ late shop, next to Hendry and Cooke’s. The proceeds will be devoted towards the expenses of sending four players to the New Zealand hockey tournament at Gisborne in the near future.

At its next meeting, in the A. and P. Rooms, Perry Street, at 7.30 on Thursday evening, the Masterton Accountant Students’ Society is to hear an address by Mr. S. L. P. Free. The subject will be “Bills of Exchange,’’ a term of wide meaning which covers the ordinary every-day cheque as well as various other commercial documents.

Bright fare will be presented by the pupils of the Masterton Technical School to-morrow and the next evening when an amusing operetta entitled. “A Royal Jester’’ will be staged. All the costumes and scenery to be used have been made at the school. Added interest is given tc the songs and libretto in view of the fact that a number of local hits have been introduced.

A car driven by R. H. Montgomery, of Auckland, collided at Taupiri on Sunday with another car driven by Dr. Fairclough, of Auckland. Montgomery, who was coming from Auckland, was overtaking a car on the bend, when he met Fai/relough, who was going north. In a head on collision both cars were practically ruined. The only person injured was Mrs Montgomery, who was cut about the fact by flying glass. She was treated at Ngaruawahia and afterwards proceeded to Auckland.—(P.A.)

Appreciation by Southland farmers of all that was done to make their recent visit to the Wairarapa so successful is conveyed in a letter received from the Southland Provincial Secretary of the Farmers’ Union, by Mr. James Watson, Wairarapa Provincial Secretary. The letter states that at the last meeting of the Southland Provincial executive members spoke in eulogistic, terms of the hospitality and courtesy extended to the visitors wherever they went. The executive passed a unanimous vote of thanks and appreciation for all that was done to make the trip a pleasant and profitable one.

The new grandstand at, the North Canterbury Racing Club’s course at Rai giora was wrecked by a north-west wind on Sunday afternoon. The building, which is 144 feet in length and 46 feet in width, with refreshment rooms at the back, was still in the builder’s hands, being near completion. It faces the north. At about 3 p.m. the wind got, under the roof, and. forced back the walls, causing the roof to collapse. The whole building will have to be dismantled and rebuilt, entailing a heavy loss to the contractors, Messrs Wadey and Efford. A strong nor’wester was also experienced in Christchurch, where slight damage was done.—(P.A.) A resident of Taumarunui, Mr. E. R. Martin, claims that he has discovered evidences of oil on lands comprising 30,000 acres in the vicinity of Taumarunui Borough. His claim is supported by Dr. Bender, a geologist of Nelson, who reports favourably on Mr. Martin’s discoveries. Last week Dr. Bender gave successful chemical demonstrations of Taumanuiui oil bearing material before the Minister of Mines. As a result of this demonstration, the Jrspector of Mines visited Taumarunui at the end of the week and went over the oil bearing-area with Dr. Bender and Mr. Martin, with the object of submitting a report on the alleged discovery to the Department. Springs and oil seepages were plainly evident in parts of the district and Dr. Bender, who has had much experience on oil fields, is confident that there is payable oil in the district.—(P.A.)
