THE RUGBY GAME.

WAIRARAPA JUNIORS WIN. HAWKE'S BAY BEATEN AT HASTINGS. Playing at Hastings on Saturday, the Wairarapa junior representative team defeated the Hawke's Bay juniors by 11 points to eight. From start to finish the game was fast, thrilling and hard. Both sides made the play open, and there were many splendid passing bouts. Wairarapa gave a wonderful display of solid tackling, and it was due to this fact that they won. The forwards were fairly evenly matched, but on the attack the Bay backs were better. They showed better understanding, and though not so fast, were more able to thrust. However, the deadly tackling of the visitors discounted this advantage. Wairarapa set the ball rolling against the wind and Hawke's Bay, making the most of their advantage scored early in the game, Thompson being responsible. Beck missed the kick. After a good stretch of play, in which the Bay dominated, the Wairarapa forwards set up a solid attack which terminated with a pretty try by Leplen. He goaled with an excellent kick. After their reverse the Bay set out to regain the lead but their efforts proved fruitless. Persistent attacking by Wairarapa saw play well in the Bay 25 and Lepien scored his second try after backing up a rearguard movement. This time his kick failed. A few minutes before the conclusion of the first spell, Evins cut in and scored a spectacular try under the posts for Hawke's Bay. Beck goaled. On resuming the game, the Green for.wards held the honours. An infringement by a Bay player gave Lepien the opportunity to improve Wairarapa’s score. He made no mistake with the kick. Wairarapa, 11; Hawke's Bay, 8. Play for the remainder of the game was very bright, and, if anything, in favour of the Wairarapa team, but no further score resulted. Mr. W. Thurlow refereed. The Wairarapa team returned to Masterton yesterday afternoon. EIGHT ALL. MARLBOROUGH & GOLDEN BAY. BLENHEIM, August 17.
