The next Supreme Court sitting at Masterton will commence on September 3. At the last meeting of the Masterton Branch of the W.C.T.U. it was decided to hold an “at home” meeting for the observance of 11 Maori Day” at the residence of Mrs Murray Jackson, Cole Street. The meeting will take place to-morrow, when an account of
the work beirg done among the Maoris will be given and a collection taken up in aid of the Maori Fund. Mr. P. B. Talbot, President of the South Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, reports a Timaru message, expressed surprise at a statement made in the House of Representatives by Mr. W. J. Polson (Stratford) President of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Relative to a discussion on taxation proposals in the budget Mr. Polson stated that he was “speaking for the farmers,” but in Mr. Talbot’s opinion Mr. Polson had spoken out of his turn. Mr. Talbot said that Mr. Polson, while president, had received no mandatory powers from the various Fanners’ Union branches, as yet, to speak on their behalf. In fact that day he (Mr. Talbot) had received a telegram asking that delegates be appointed from the South Canterbury Branch to attend a conference in Wellington on Thursday next. —(P.A.)
