ENGLAND AND SOUTH AFRICA. SOME* SOLID BATTING. VISITORS LEADING. United Fiess Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 1. The second Test match between England and South Africa was continued at Lords before 10,000 spectators. South Africa resumed their innings with the overnight score of 57 for one wicket. Christie and Mitchell appeared set for a big partnership, when Duckworth smartly stumped the latter. Christie terminated an excellent innings by trying an impossible run. Tate, bowling fast, secured Deane’s wicket. White’s perfect length kept the batsmen quiet, 150 appearing after three hours. A brilliant catch dismissed Cameron. Hammond and O’Connor were both hurt fielding. White was unable to obtain a substitute until Deane called on Catterall to play for England, a groundsman replacing him later. With six down for 237, Tate successfully appealed for leg-before-wicket against Morkel, who received an ovation for a sterling innings. McMillan lifted the English skipper to the ladies’ enclosure the ball striking a spectator on the temple. With the ninth wicket down, Owen Smith opened out briskly and carried the total to 322.
