CARRYING OF SHEEP.
CONVEYANCE AT NIGHT OPPOSED. LEGISLATION DESIRED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. The support of the Canterbury A. and P. Association is to be given to an. effort of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union to have legislation brought down 1 to prevent the carrying of sheep in motor lorries at night. At a meeting of the committee of the Association to-diay Loekhead said that the permitting of stock being transported at night presented too large an opening to sheep stealers. He knew of numerous cases where sheep had been stolen at night and carted away in motor trucks. There was too good an opportunity offered to dishonest persons of making easy money. A sheepowner in Oxford hadi suffered extensively from night raid® by motor lorry thieves, who found it easy to get away with a number of sneep. He also suggested that auctioneers be compelled to stipulate earmarks on the various lots of sheep 'offered for sale. Mr. J. D. Hall said that legislation to prevent the carting of sheep at night was most desirable. He knew it was a common thing for owners to lose stock in this way. It was agreed in discussion, that legislation should require only that no sheep -should be loaded or carted at night without a permit and that sheep so carted would be subject to inspection by any police officer. A motion was carried supporting the proposals of the sheep owners.—(P.A.)
