The Department of .Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated March. 23, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow: Market quieter. No auction this week and prices unchanged Hemp: Manila market dull and easier though little more doing at the diecline. “J" grade April/June shipment sold £36/10/-. Sisal: Market quiet and slightly easier in absence of demand. Value No 1 for March/May shipment £4O/-/- to £4O/10/-, No 2 £37/10/- t 38/-/-. New Zealand: Market dull in sympathy with others, and buyers holding back. Comparative c.i.f. nominal values for March/May and February/April shipments are:— High points £33/10/- to- £34/-/-; Fair £3l/15/- to £3l/-/-; Common £29/15/to £3O/-/-; Rejected £27/15/- to £2B; Tow 2nd grade £2l/-/-; 3rd grade £lB/-/-. Stocks in Great Britain on 28th February 60 tons against 68 tons same time last year. Wool: -Sales closed on Thursday. Large attendance throughout and good competition for all combing Merino and Crossbreds, Home Trade being largest operators. Germany more reserved. Good selection of South American taken mi?inly by Continent. Crossbreds slightly weakened during early period of sales, but larger portion of fall recovered later Compared with closing rates January series superior Merino par to 5 per cent, lower amid other 5 per cent, lower. Fine and medium Crossbreds 7| per cent, coarse Crossbred 5 per cent, lower. Average closin gvalues:—6o/64'a; Super, 1/lld to 2/ld; Average (this sale in a better condition than last) l/5d to l/8d; 56/58's Super Half bred 1/1 Od to 2s; sO’s/sn's, l/7d to l/9d; 48/50's, 1/5M to 1/7; 44/46', l/4d to 1/5; 36/40’s, l/3d to 1/4. Good tone at close and market shows more confidence. Total offerings 99,000 boles of which 84,000 sold, Home Trade taking 37,0-00, Continent 43,000, and Ameiiea 4,000. Next series commence April 30.
A Glasgow woman recently announced her intention of paying for a new lifeboat for the National Lifeboat In?tivution. Within a few hours some one else in Glasgow had arranged for another new lifeboat.
