PUBLIC CONVENIENCE.

MOTION FOR REMOVAL DEFEATED. DISCUSSION AT BOROUGH COUNCIL. The matter of removing the public convenience at the Post Office corner was again brought before the Masterton Borough Council last night by Councillor A. Fletcher. , Councillor Fletcher declared that the convenience was a menace to health, and proceeded to support her statement. She moved that the convenience be removed from the Post Office corner before the next council meeting. The motion was seconded by Councillor E. F. Barton. Councillor H. M. Peacock disagreed with Councillor Fletcher regarding the health aspect of the matter, maintaining that the convenience was not a menace to health. He quoted the opinions of local doctors in support of his statement. Otherwise, he quite agreed with Councillor Fletcher that the convenience should be removed, but not before another place was found. On the matter'being referred to the Sanitary Inspector (Mr. T. A. Russell), he stated that the convenience was not detrimental to health, but it was an offence against the civic sense. He did not consider it necessary.

The Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) stated that during the visit recently of the Postmaster-General to Masterton, he brought the matter under his notice. The Hon. Mr. Donald informed him that the letter boxes, when the Post Office was altered, would face Hall Street, and the convenience could not be allowed to remain. That being the case, said Mr. Jordan, he suggested to Mr. Donald that the Government would help to find another place for it. Councillor A. Rippon moved as an amendment that the convenience ‘be left in its present position until another one was erected in close proximity. The Mayor refused to accept this, however, ruling it out as a negative. An amendment moved by Councillor C. B. McClymont that the matter of removal be referred to the Works Committee lapsed for want of a seconder.

On tjhe motion being put to the meeting it was lost. On the motion of Councillor Fletcher the Town Clerk was instructed to inquire from the Trust Lands Trust the terms required for a lease of a section in Church Street, next to the Urgent Dispensary. Councillor Fletcher mentioned that she had a letter from the Trust stating its willingness to consider a request to lease the section in question.
