JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.

MASTERTON TEACHERS’ PROTEST SUPPORTED. The secretary of the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute (Mr. G. J. Goldsman) has received the following letter from the secretary of the South Canterbury! branch regarding the protest of the Masterton branch against the junior high school scheme:— “lam instructed by the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute that you. be informed that you have the hearty support of this branch in the attitude taken up by you in regard to the establishment of junior high schools. The New Zealand Educational Institute, Wellington, has been accordingly informed. Wishing you success in your efforts.” It is of some interest that at itsl meeting in February last, the Dominion Executive of the Farmers' Union passed the following resolution with reference to junior high schools:— “This Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union strenuously opposes the introduction of any educational system or methods which will have the effect of reducing the value and importance of our primary schools or will have the effect of weakening the system of curtailing the functions of these schools.'’ In moving the resolution. Mr. Dickie said that the suggest-! ed post-primary or junior high schools would have the effect of weakening all country schools as all pupils between the ages of twelve and fifteen would have to attend post-primary schools.
