M i BUGBY TOURNEY WON BY J OLD BOYS_ [ AMUSING EVENTS IN EVENING The carnival held, in the Masterton Park Oval on Saturday afternoon and evening was favoured by [ ideal weather. Although there was not a very good attendance of the . public in the afternoon when a seven-aside Eugby tourney was held the evening session was witnessd by a much larger crowd. As a result of the effort the Park Lighting Committee benefited to the amount of £97 6s 2d, that sum a being the total receipts for the day. Expenses, of course, have yet to be deducted from this amount. Some good Rugby was witnessed in ■the tournament and tfiere was no doubt ftkat'The Old Boys A team secured a popular victory. In the final between the Old Boys A and B teams a fairly «vVn game resulted. Cooke, aided by Sutcliffe, proved a little too experienced. Cooke secured in midfield shortly before half-time, passed to Roaehc, ■who went over wide out. From the drop ont Cooke was again in possession and with a fine run scored between The posts, for Roache to convert. The B's rallied and a rush saw Malfroy teore at the corner. Just before the ifinh! bell Sutcliffe secured and ran <dean through, to Cooke oa thfc Zine, making the final score, Old Boys A 11, Old Boys B 3. The members of the winning team were Cooke (captain), Sutcliffe, Chesterman, Roache, Faudknor. Le Quesne. F. Smith. Following are the detailed results of the tourney:— First round: Bed Star beat Athletic ’A, 8-3; Old Boys A beat Grey town, 8-3; Old Boys B beat Athletic, 11-8. Semi-final. Old Boys A beat Red i?t- r, 15-C: Old Boys B, a bye. Final: Old Boy's A beat Old Boys B, 11-3.. A kicking competition for drop, J>l«ce and punt kicking, decided on the aggregate was won by F. Fuller (Greyjtown), B. Fuller (Greytown) being second and W. Yates (Old Boys) third. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES Early in the evening, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presented the trophies to the winning teem of the Rugby tourney. He stated that he hoped that the shield would not be thrown overboard, as in the past there had been some question of another shield being thrown overboard. He had as much pleasure in handing the present trophy to Captain Cooke as if it were the •ÜBanfurly Shield and he hoped that it would lx- stoutly defended.. Mr Jordan also presented to each of the seven members of the Old Boys team, a mining u*n«-cup. He also made a prasentatroc o? another trophy for the kicking competition, the winner being F. Ful ler. NEW RECORDS BY T. OAKLEY Included in the evening programme was a number of highly-amusing novelty events, which were greatly enjoyed by the public. T. Oakley, the New Zealand champion cyclist, of Masterton, made a successful attempt to lower the record of 2mins. 11 4-ssees. for a mile, paced. He improved the time by 3-5 of a second. Later, however, in ihe mile cycle event, he did even better, doing the distance in 2mins. Usees, dead. Much appreciated musical items were rendered by the Ma»terton Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr R. J. Young, throughout the afternoon and evening. The band also neaded a procession in the evening from the Municipal Buildings, in which the Masterton Fine Brigade also took •art. The brigade, ater in the evengave the public a good item when ’t ieyponded to an alarm of fire, represented by coloured lights, in the Park Oval. The expedition with which the brigade was on the scene was commendable A number of side shows in the evening also helped to swell the funds. The prizes m the fancy drees competition for children were awarded to May Tinkler (girls) and RoUie Walker (boys.)
