SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age” Special.) The new school year at the Carterton District High School has opened with an increased attendance. The primary department has gone up from 380 last year, to 388 this year, and the secondary department from 32 to 41. Mr. C. H. Olson is acting headmaster at present until the arrival of Mr. A. T. White, of Shannon, who takes up his appointment on March 1. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for Greytown for January were:—Births, 8; deaths, 2; marriage, 1. Hayshed Destroyed. A hayshed belonging to the estate of the late Mr. Norman Hodder, at South Featherston, was totally destroyed by lire at an earlyjhour on Monday morning. The Fire Brigade prevented the lire from spreading to the adjawnt buildings. The origin of the outbreak is a mystery. The contents were insured for £lOO. Polo. Following is the Wairarapa polo team to compete at the Hawke’s Bav polo tournament, which commences at Hastings on Friday:—No. 1, H. G. HewittNo. 2, R. N. Barton; No. 3, D C Collins; No. 4, D. H. 8. Riddiford (cate tain). Oddfellows. The Carterton Lodge of Oddfellows has decided to pay a visit to Loyal Unity Lodge, Featherston, on Thursday February 21 A.O.F. The District Officers of the Ancient Order of Foresters have arranged to pay their annual visit to the Wairarapa on Wednesday, February 13, at Masterton. A number of the members of Court Marquis of Normantoy, Carterton, have arranged to be present at the gathering. The annual conference of delegates from the various lodges of the Ancient Order of Foresters in the Wellington district takes place at Wellington today. Court Marquis of Normanby (Carterton) is being represented by C.R. Bro. H. H. Armstrong. Annual Outing. The annual picnic of the railway workers at Cross Creek was held during the week-end on the Wairarapa Racing Club's course at Tauherenikau, kindly placed at the disposal of the committee. Fine weather favoured the outing, and a large attendance spent a pleasant time. Garden Fete. A garden fete in aid of the funds of the Carterton Methodist Church circuit will be held shortly.

FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) Mrs. J. M. G. McKenzie (Featherston) has returned home after an enjoyable holiday at Eastbourne, Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ball have returned to their home in Featherston, after a holiday at Hawera. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Kibblewhite and family, Featherston, have returned home from a holiday which thev spent at Eastbourne. Tennis.

In the final for the handicap doubles of the JYatherston Tennis Club, played on Saturday afternoon, after a keenly contested and interesting game, Miss Barry and Cundy (owe 5) were successful in beating Miss Card and Churchill (owe 12), 52/50. In the ladies’ handicap singles, Miss Cundy beat Miss E. Johnson, 60/58. Croquet.

Further matenes played to date for the Haunui Croquet Club’s Cup are as under:—Mrs. Carlyon beat Mrs. Rea, 26/9; Miss Card beat Mrs. Bea, 26/22; Mrs. Carlyon beat Mrs. Simpson, 26/7; Mrs. Vincent beat Mrs. Tutbury, 26/9. MAUBICEVILIiE WEST

(“The Age” Special). On Saturday night Mr and Mjw George Nielsen were given a kitchen evening and were the recipints of many useful gifts.

A tennis tournament between the Mount Bruce and Mauncevillo West clubs was played at Mauriceville West 'during the week-end. The visitors proved easy winners by 28 games to 4. Mr A. W. Hood has returned home from a visit to New Plymouth. Mr L. A. Pedersen, of Ormondville, Visited relatives here during the weekend.

Mr Peter Mortensen is visiting relatives at Waitara.

Mrs E. Palmer is spending a few days in Wellington.
