THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 1929. THE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The gratifying success of the tennis tournament conducted in Masterton: during the past few days is to be welcomed, not only as a justification of the zealous and untiring work of the officials of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association, but as an impressive and convincing indication of the growing popularity of a very fine sport. The noteworthy success of the tournament is apparent to all who have followed its fortunes. Not so very long ago, it seemed possible that by electing to hold a competing tournament on. the same dates, the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association had done something to undermine the Wairarapa fixture. No such fear is any longer entertained. It is established very clearly that the: Wairarapa tournament has its own sufficient appeal, and is able to attract leading players from all parts of the Dominion, irrespective of what may be done in Wellington.

Something of the success of this year’s tournament may be due to- the fiict that the North Island championships were bracketed with the provincial events, but the additional attraction is not particularly important. It baa been demonstrated in other years that the North Island championships are not necessarily in themselves a very potent, draw. The main factors accounting for the success and popularity of the Wairarapa tournament are in plain sight. Besides being thoroughly well organised, it is held 'th.™ mUC ’ I ,?J Msantei - environment han can readily be found in, br in no near neighbourhood of a large 15 ". ble to offer good tennis “ * h “. su 5 rounQ W? and atmosphere o a picnic meeting.
