BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan,presiding. There were also present, Councillors A. Fletcher, H. J. O ’Leary, C. Ancillors H. M. Peacock, H. H. Daniell and E. F. Barton. Apologies were ‘received from Councillors H. M. Peacock and E. F. Barton. With reference to the -Wairarapa Hospital Board’s drainage proposal, it was reported that the board was now willing to accept the previous offer made by the council. An interview is to be held to-day with board representatives to see if arrangements can be made for the council to carry out the main part of the work, the laying of the drainage from Columba Road to the back of the maternity ward, the work to be carried out under the supervision of the borough engineer. The council decided that provided an agreement was reached the work be proceeded with at once. The Master-toil Municipal Band was granted the use of the Park on a -Saturday in January or February, free «f rent and with the right to charge. The Wairarapa Sub-Centre were also granted the use of the Park Oval on February 9 for the Wellington Provincial championships, free of charge, provided that a payment be made in liquidation of the debt incurred in improving the track. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club was granted the use of the Park Oval, free of charge, on December 15. The Council decided to take over the £4lOO and £llOO Lansdowne Water Supply Loans from the Masterton County Council, subject to the lenders confirming their agreement to this being done. The Main Highways Board forwarded the sum £162 19s. 2d., being the Council’s proportion of the petrol tax collected for the quarter ended September 30, 1928. The transfer of the Coronation Coffee Palace license from Mr. Masen to Mr. Daly was agreed to. The District Public Trustee, who wrote asking for a refund of a proportion of . the rates on the top floor of the Public Trust Building, is to be asked to name the authority under which he is making the application. In order to satisfy the officers of the Deeds Department, the Council decided that the portion of Cornwall Street from PownaM Street westwards, called Bennington- Street, shall be known henceforth as Cornwall Street. Accounts totalling £5622 10s. were passed for payment. The Gas Manager’s recommendation that a test holder be procured at a cost of £l6O was agreed to. The Council endorsed the Gas Manager’s action in arranging for a gas demonstration in December. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club was granted the use of the Park on Anniversary Day for its annual sports and also in the evening for an electric light meeting, rent free, conditionally on the rent being used for the purpose of liquidating the debt on the kerbing of the Oval. The combined Wairarapa schools were granted the use of the Park Oval on Tuesday, December 11, for the annual school sports, on the same conditions as last year. The St. Vincent de Paul 'Society was granted the use of the Social Hall for their recent -dance, rent free. The Druids’ Lodge was granted, rent free, the use of the Concert Hall on the afternoon of December 15 for their annual Christmas Tree function. 1 The Girl Guides’ Association was charged £1 for the use of the Social Hall on December 6.
