BOROUGH WORK.

ENGINEER'S REPORT FOR OCTOBER The Borough Engineer (Mr C. R. Mabson) reported <as follows for October: — Water and. drainage: During the month 6 new services and 5 renewals were put in. Blocked sewers in Columba Road, Bannister Street and two in Villa Street were cleared, and sewers and water mains were flushed. Floods still continue at the headworks and are keeping up for days at a time, with the result that it has been .impossible to avoid getting a certain, amount of dirty water into the •reservoir. The groynes protecting he pipe line have been again damaged and will be repaired as soon as the weather permits. Streets: Maintenance work has been carried, out in Albert, Short, Donald. Villa, Herbert, Kuripuni, Totara, Titoki, Third and Oxford streets and Ngaumutawa, Roberts and To Ore Orc roads. Boulder crushing was completed on November 8, and a start with the grading and forming up of Wrigley Street was made the following day. The flanks of Chapel Street between Renal! and Cornwall streets have been graded and formed up. The Queen Street path from O'Leary's blacksmith shop to Russell Street, is benig reformed. Tho e bottom of both men’s and ladies’ baths were tarred and sanded and the wall were cement-washed, and hand rails repaired. The dividing fence at the rear of the men's baths was blown aown and bas been re-erected. SANITARY INSPECTOR’S REPORT The Sanitary Inspector (Mr T. A. Russell) reported as follows:— Notifiable infectious diseases: One case of scarlet fever in Pine Street was notified on October 18.. Since then no case of infectious disease has been reported. Plumbing and drainage: Eight sewer connections were put in and 38 plumbing and drainage permits issued. Food premises: Ice-cream; * twenty licenses to sell ice-creams have been approved and a further application received. Fish shop and restaurant: An application for a license to sell fish and also to conduct a restaurant has been received from L. Neilson, and as the promises comply with the regulations, a license is recommended. Milk samples: The usual milk samples were taken and several milk farms were visited. Inspections: A good deal of inspection of business and residential premises has been carried out and’ the following requisitions served: Repairs to plumbing, 15; provide rubbish bins, 2; remove fowl-houses, 2; remove rubbish, 10; abate nusianees, 3; renovate premises. 1; remove pig, 1. Noxious weeds: Forty-five notices have been served to occupiers to clear broom and gorse. Elderberry, hemlock, fennel an.l blackberry will be next dealt with. It is suggested that Inspector McGregor be appointed an inspector of noxious weeds.

Carters ’ licenses: Several carters iave failed to take out their carters’ licenses although their attention has been drawn to the omission. As the year is now well advanced it is recommended that any carters operating in the borough without a license be prosecuted. Heavy traffic: Tho quarters fees M.ve come in very well; £199 Ils 8d has been collected or received during the month. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT Mr James Learmomth (Gas Manager) reported that in October the gas mawfactured was 4,683,000 cubic feet, being a decrease of 2.6 per cent, over the corresponding period of last year. Gas -old for the month of September showed a decrease of -1.1 per cent. Eight cookers were sold during the month and seven new consumers placed on the books. Mains and services: The main layers arc now working in Coradine Street on the 4 inch main. At present the consumers are connected on the hio-h pressure main which is very unsatisfactory. During the month 2093 bags of coke, including 786 bags of crushed coke, we-o sold. Thirty-one and a half tons of household coal and 320 gallons of tar were also disposed of.
