EGG GUARANTEE.
POULTRY FARMERS REQUEST AN INCREASE CHRISTCHURCH, August 12. A deputation of poultry farmers representing the whole Dominion waited on the Hon. A. D. McLeod on -Saturday to ask the Government to increase the guarantee on exported eggs by one penny per dozen. Figures were quoted to show the extent of the growth of the industry, and it was urged tint the extra penny would place the industry on a sound basis. Replying, Mr. McLeod said he only wished the evidence presented to him were available to every person in the Dominion. He defended the principle of subsidising a new industry to establish it. As to Vtho egg industry, northern farmers claimed that owing to the higher price for wheat in the North Island, their. production cost about a penny per dozen above that in the South Island. For this reason, there would certainly be an agitation in the North to admit fowl wheat into the country duty free. Mr. McLeod promised to bring the matter before the Minister of Agriculture, and added that poultry farmers had his sympathy. He added in conclusion that of the soldier settlers, who had failed on t>b land, by far the highest percentage was in poultry farming.—(P.A.)
