COUNTY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL (“The x\ge” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held on Friday at the Council 'Chambers, Martinborough. There were present Councillors Q. Donald (chairman-), W. B Martin (treasurer), D. Cameron, 'G. Gillies, J. McLeod, J. Martin and 6. W. Matthews. An apology was received for the absence of Councillor J. Thompson. The treasurer reported:—Receipts. £7814 3s lOd; bank balance, credit, £4298 5s 3-cfc outstanding cheques, £l3Ol 5s Bd. Ridings balances were reported as follow: Greytown, debit, £BO 13s 3d; Featherston, debit, £313 5s 7d; Otaraia debit, £747 13 s 6d; Awhia, debit, £504 6s Id; Pahaoa, debit, £l9l 15s lOd; Martinborough, debit, £394 14s; Western Lake, credit, £209 15s 9d; Kahautara, credit, £3646 18s 3d; Turanganui, credit, £487 2s. Accounts amounting to £5266 14s 9d were passed for payment. The secretary of the Featherston County Central Schools’ Library Association wrote applying for a .grant towards the library funds for the purchase of new books. A grant, thj same as in the previous year, was passed. Mr. H. L. Griffiths, solicitor, wrote covering copies of letters sent, under instructions from Messrs F. McLeod, M. McLeod, R. Frater and other ratepayers of the Dry River Water Race district, to the Martinborough Borough Council, and Mr. D. Flynn, dealing with the matter of their ac'tidn in closing the intake of the race'supply.—lt was resolved that the Borough Council and the Water Race Committee meet members of the County Council at the head works on. August 17, at 10.30 a.m. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, in reply to- a request for a gra-nt of £2OO to dee-pen tho Battersea Road drain, asked, in view of the metal taken out of the drain being us|d on the roads, if the council would be willing to make a contribution to the work and would be willing to carry out the work on behalf of the Department. The matter was loft in the hands of the chairman and Councillor J. Thompson.

Mr Charles Elgar wrote asking for permission to put drain pipes across the road that runs between his property and that of Mr G. Pains at Kahutara. —Grafted. Mr W. Robertshaw, Eketahuna, asked if the council would l hire to him their three-ton monkey for a period of about three weeks. A cheque for £lO as deposit was enclosed as good faith. —-Granted.

IV. Smith, Eastern Ridings ranger, reported having dealt with 4 cattle and '3 horses during the month and J. B. Crawford, Western Ridings ranger, with 61 head of stock during the same period. . The crusher foreman reported having crushed 1559- yards of metal during the month at a cost of 3s B|d per yard. The engineer reported that the filling at Gooding’s Culvert would be completin two- weeks’ time. Kahutara Road: About 1| miles of this road had been scarified and rolled. Main highways: The plans for the proposed work on the Martinborough-Grevtown, and Bidwill ’s Cutting to the Big Bends have now been prepared for lodgement with the Public Works Department. Lake Domain Road: These plans have been prepared and the estimated cost of the work is £475. Palliser Bay Road: Tho survey for this, road will be made next week.

Masterton-Martinborough Road, 1600 yards: Four tenders were received -and the acceptance of one was left to the treasurer and Councillor D. Cameron.

Awhia Road, 800 yards: Three tenders were received and that of H. Blair at 4s lid per yard, was accepted. A bonus of xlOj.was granted to W. Chasland, one bf, the White Truck drivers.

In connection with the Awhia Road deviation it was decided that the engineer, who has now prepared plans, interview the Public Works Department to arrive at a decision as to th? better route.

The engineer was instructed to ob tain an extra tar bailer to facilitate this season’s work and also to call tenders for the purchase of the engine previously used at the crusher. The overseer was instructed to lift the decking of the Ponui Bridge about two feet.
