At last evening’s meeting of the ccmimittee of the Wairarapa Soldiers’ Club, thirty new soldier members and five honorary members were elected'. The Wanganui boxing championships were decided last night as follows: Paperweight, J. Anderson; flyweight, T. Holly; bantam, S. Gray; feather, li. Morton; light, A. Karten; welter J. Lockett; middle, H. Scown (Pstea); heavy, H. Adams (Marton.) —(PA.) Alice Dorothy Thompson, aged four years, was run over by a motor lorry in Adelaide Road, Newtown, Wellington, at five o’clock last night and died on the way to the hospital, which is nearby. The lorry, the back wheel of which passed oter the child’s body, was being driven by William John Mason.—(P.A.) A commencement has been made with the construction of a side chapeland vestry at St Matthew’s Church, the work being part of the original building scheme. It is expected that the chapel, which will accommodate about forty people and will be used for week-day services, will be a very beautiful addition to the church. The cost of the work is over £2OOO.
A meeting of Anglican clergy of the Wairarapa Archdeaconry was held at the Vicarage, Masterton, yesterday, after a service in St. Matthew’s Church. Many matters of business were discussed, including the Rev. T. Feildpn Taylor appeal, social service, an organiser for the district and missionary quotas. The next meeting will be held o-n September 3, also at the Vicarage, Masterton.
A special summoned meeting of the Druids’ Lodge was held last evening, Bro. S. J. Finlayson A.D. presiding. The lodge was adjourned for ten minutes out of respect to the late Bro. .J. W. Wardle. Visitors were present from Eketahuna and Christchurch lodges. Bro. G. W. Milne P.A. was nominated for the position of District President. It was decided to hold a Royal ArchChapter meeting on Wednesday, August 15.
A practical lecture under the auspices of the women’s branch of the St. John Ambulance will be given at the Municipal Buildings to-morrow evening at eight o’clock. The practical work with which the lecture is to deal is most useful and is a necessary part of all women’s education. The lecture will be given by Nurse Cocker assisted by Nurse McClurg.
