IMPORTANT KEY CITY TAKEN BY NATIONALISTS. SERIOUS NORTHERN DEFEAT INDICATED OPENING WAY TO CAPITAL United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SHANGHAI, May 30. Pekin and Tokio reports say that the Nationalists have occupied Paoting-fu, the key city to the capital, eighty miles south-west of Pekin. The report, if true, means that Peichunghsis troops thrown in from Shinh-Chia-Chuan have had a serious reverse. Chiang-Hsuch-Liang, a son of General Chang-Tso-Lin, was unable to stem the Southern onslaught at Mancheng, west of Paoting-fu. The lesult was that the Southerners burst through the position, capturing the. city at 3 o’clock »n the morning.—(Adstniian Press Association—United Service). HEAVY FIGHTING
SIX THOUSAND KILLED SHANGHAI, May 30. Six thousand were killed and many thousands wounded in heavy fighting between the Shansiis and Mukden troops along the Pekin-Hankow railway during a three-day engagement. It is reported that neither side gained much. Other fronts are practically quiet, the Northerners succeeding in holding their positions.—(Australian Press Association).
