LOST ITALIA
STORMY WEATHER HINDERS SEARCH. FUR TRAPPERS TO TRAVERSE COAST. CITTA DI MILANO HELD UP. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright. (Received Wednesday, 7.15 mm.) LONDON, May 29. Advices from King’s Bay state that the Citta di Milano’s expedition in search of the Italia is at a standstill, as the ship is not strongly enough built to ■withstand ice pressure. Moreover, it is now considered that the only men who can now help the Italia are a few fur trappers, accustomed to the conditions on the coast. The trappers are now being organised in order that a search may begin forthwith. The Hobby and Braganza will be manned by special crews, and will carry- a detachment of Norwegian soldiers, who are used to the Polar regions. If the Italia came down in South Spitsbergen, there is little hope of survival as the ice there is constantly shifting and landing from an aeroplane or boat is almost impossible. Thus far, nothing has been achieved by the aeroplanes, owing to storms which have been almost continuous since the Italia started. A message from the Citta di Milano denies the receipt of any message whatever from seal hunters on or around Amsterdam Island. —-(Australian Press Association.)
