POISON GAS.
THE TRAGEDY IN HAMBURG. MANY VICTIMS. INQUIRIES BY AUTHORITIES. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 22. Hamburg’s hospitals are still treating 250 gassed cases. Many at first slight are becoming more serious. Several hitherto apparently unaffected were taken to hospital to-day. Stolzenburg’s says that the leakage is inexplicable, iuasiiipch as the tanks were periodically tested and carefully supervised. The authorities are demanding why gas sufficient to wipe out the population of Hamburg was stored in ordinary, instead of steel-lined tanks.—(“Times” cable.) (An earlier message states that gashelmeted men are parading the deserted streets in a manner reminiscent of war time. It will be clays before the people can return to their homes. Officials deny any knowledge of the existence of the gas, though there are allegations that it was manufactured in Russia as an emergency supply against disturbances daring the Ruhr occupation.) PROSECUTION SUGGESTED. (Received Wednesday, 8 p.m.) BERLIN, May 23. With reference to the suggestion that the League of Nations investigate the Hamburg poison gas episode, it is semiofficially stated that the manufacture of phosgene is allowed under the Implements of War Law. in factories specially licensed by the Ministry of Trade. Whether the Hamburg gas conformed te the law will be a subject of inquiry. If the law has been infringed a prosecution will follow.—(Australian Press Association.)
