The United Wairarapa Methodist Bible classes will parade on Sunday morning to the Kuripuni Church, when they will assist in the service.
No W.E.A. lecture will bo delivered in Masterton on Easter' Monday evening. On Monday evening, April 16, an address will be delivered by Dr N. H. Prior.
Sidney Wordsworth Smith, for permitting a car to stand in Queen Street without a rear light, was fined 10s and 10s costs in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. On Monday next, the Masterton Post Office will be closed in all branches. Mails for despatch on that day will close at 6 a.m. Rural mail and postmen’s deliveries will be suspended. Telegraph office hours will fee 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. tq midnight. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, has notified the secretary of the Wairarapa Progress League that ne 'Will be pleased to receive the deputation with regard to the Wairarapa Lake Recreation Reserve at the Featherston Borough Council Chambers, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10. The Mayor of Wellington, Mr G. A. Troup, has announced that it is his intention to close the Monerieff-Hood fund during next week. The fund ■now stands at about £2OOO. Mr Troup requests that all lists should bo returned whether they bear the names of subscribers or not. #
A collision occurred at the intersection of Queen and Perry streets, Masterton, on Thursday afternoon, between a light delivery car owned by Mr Minton, of South Road, and a large heavy lorry owned by Mr R. Beattie, of Masterton. Mr Minton’s vehicle, was damaged somewhat, but no one was injured.
The Rev. E. O. Blamires, the newlyappointed minister to the Methodist Church, will bo in Masterton during Easter. He will conduct services morning and evening in Wesley Church. The members of 'the various fire brigades throughout the district now visiting Masterton, will hold a church parade, attending the morning service at Wesley Church to-morrow. The Wairarapa Young Men’s Methodist Bible Class camp at Rangitumau Was yesterday visited by the Rev. ]J. O. Blamires, who conducted a service at 11 a.m. The Rev. E. W. Weymouth also visited the camp during the afternoon, being delegated to speak on behalf of the New Zealand Alliance. Both speakers were listened to with interest and received cordial welcomes from all.
Mr F. J. Coleman presided at. the Optimist Club luncheon on Thursday. A most interesting address was given by Mr W. L. Butler, of the telephone exchange, who spoke on the working of the automatic telephone. Mr Butler described in amusing vein the many aspects of exchange work—complaints and faults, fusing of the lines, turning lightning to earth, the vagaries of the current, the experiences of the new subscribers and the unnecessary trouble they often gave. At the close of the address the speaker answered many questions, giving much interesting and helpful information. Thomas Manly, of Ohaewai, was killed at Okaihau railway station o» Thursday evening, shortly after 7 o’clock. As a train arrived, Manly, who was a middle-aged man, was seen leaning against the' railing of a carriage. Apparently while shunting operations were in progress he remembered leaving his walking stick in the carriage, for the stick was found after the accident. In stepping on to the platform, Manly slipped and fell between two carriages. Cries were heard by persons ah the station, and Mr. Charles Blair applied the Westinghouse brake, but the body was dragged some distance. Death must have been almost instem»meo«a^-(P,A).
