SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special.) The Greytown Chamber of Commerce has decided to approach the Railways Department, with a view to securing lighting at the Matarawa railway station. Savage Club. The annual meeting of the Carterton Savage Club was held on Thursday evening. The report and balance sheet, the latter showing a credit of £2O, was adopted. Officers were elected as follows: Chief savage, H. F. Skey; de-puty-chief savage, A. W. Hall; chief scribe, Savage S. V. Gooding; musical director, Savage T. Vaughan; council of braves, Savages W. A. Kitchen, J. Minehan, G. C. Phillips, J. S. Connell, George Brown, A. Krahagen and T. Feast. The subscription was left the same as last year, and the date of the opening Korero was left to the incoming committee. Five resignations were held over. Savage J. Milner was accorded a vote of thanks for his donation of a ceremonial club, and a similar compliment was accorded Savage J. P. Johnston, for his services as chief scribe during the past two years. Rural Post Offices.
At a meeting of Clareville settlers on Thursday evening, a resolutidn of protest against the closing of the Clareville Post Office was carried, and arrangements made for a deputation to interview the Postmaster-General on the matter. A meeting of Hinakura settlers /on Thursday expressed strong disapproval at the Postal Department’s intention to close the Post Office. Being 18 miles from Martinborough, it will mean that the settlers will have |o travel this extra distance to transact postal business. Traffic Notice. The Wairarapa South County Council gives notice that the ©ld bridge and its approaches at Booth’s Creek, Gladstone, is now closed to all traffic, which must now follow the new deviation and life the new bridge. Croquet. The trophies of the Carterton Croquet Club have been awarded as follows: A championship (rose bowl;, Mrs Knutson, runner-up Mrs Pink; B championship, Mrs Sauli, runner-up, Mrs Zillwood; handicap singles, Mrs Knutson; combined handicap doubles, Mesdames Knutson, and Saville.
Anzac Service. The Rev R. P. Keall will conduit special Anzac services at Carterton, Belvedere and Dalefield Methodist churches, morning, afternoon, and evening respectively, to morrow. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) Mr and Mrs Campbell Pearce have returned from a motor tour to Wanganui. Mr J. Burt is at present confineel to his room, suffering from serious chest trouble. Mr and Mrs Charles and the Misses Charles, spent the Easter holidays on a motor tour to Wanganui. Much interest is being taken in the election of members for the Featherston Borough Council. Those who intend to seek election are as follows: Messrs R. Watson, C. R. Skipage, 11. Cundy, H. Buck, W. Peene, A. Donald (present members), Benton, Shepperd, Dohnt, Tait and Austen.
