IN COUNTRY OUTPOSTS.

WORK OF THE WOMEN’S DIVISION. (To the Editor). Sir, —The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union (Masterton branch), thanks to the generosity of various donors, has collected (and is continuing to collect) books, magazines and illustrated papers for circulation in back-block districts. I would be glad, therefore, if those who know of people living in lonely outposts would forward , me the names and addresses, that my branch may get into touch with them. The aims of the W.D.F.U. are gradually becoming known, but I shall take this opportunity of reminding your readers that while this circulation of books serves a very helpful purpose, yet the main object of the division is to create a fund from which to provide bush nurses and housekeepers for backblock districts. A cause that aims at assisting lonely or sick mothers in country outposts in the time of their greatest need does not require arguments in its favour. Any woman who lias read in the papers of extreme cases of loneliness or ill-health leading even to murder and suicide, needs no telling of the desperate straits that could induce such action in a poor mother driven demented by continued isolation or sickness. On May 4, the W.D.F.U is holding a shop day to further the objects above stated, and tho committee invite contributions of any kind for the various stalls. Thanking you for your valuable space.;—l am, etc., N. A. R. BARKER. Masterton, April 21.
