SHARKS AND SURFERS.

ALARM ON SYDNEY BEACHES. SYDNEY, October 25. The exceptional prevalence of sharks so early in the surfing season is causing a scare among bathers. Yesterday at Maroubra a big shark chased in a group of ont-swimmers, and at Cronulla, Bondi and Coogee sharks paid visits inshore, causing frightened bathers to scatter to the shore amid big crowds, whom the unusual heat of the day had attracted to the surf. On the- previous Sunday a good-sized shark, which approached swimmers, was chased and captured by a surf boat. Five boys were swimming in the Clarence River at Mac Lean in five feet of water when a shark dashed in among them, and bit one of the boys, inflicting a nasty wound in the leg, requiring several stitches. The boy, as he- scrambled ashore was followed by the shark, but he managed to evade a second attack. _{P.A.)
