HIGH COURT SCENE.
QUAKKEL ON THE BENCH. JUDGE WALKS OFF, MELBOURNE, October 7. During a hearing before the High Court of Australia of an appeal by a Chinaman, who had sued an Indian, Mr. Justice Higgins desired information from counsel addressing the Court regarding the time required for ripening tomatoes. Mr. Justice Starke objected to the question, contending that it was a waste of the Court’s time and not relevant. After an exchange of words between the two Judges, Mr. Justice Higgins walked off the Bench. After consultation with the other Judges, the Chief Justice adjourned the' Court till to-day. (The Hon. Henry Bournes Higgins, Justice of the High Court of Australia since 1906, was born in Ireland, and landed in Australia in 1870. He took high honours at Melbourne University and was called to the Victorian Bar in 1876. Ho sat in the Victorian Parliament in the ’nineties, and from 19016 was M.P. for North Melbourne in the Federal Parliament. He was CofiTmonwealth Attorney-General in 1904and President of the Commonwealth Court of Arbitration from 1907 73 1921. The Chief Justice of Australia is the Right Hon. Sir Adrian Knox. The Hon. Hayden Erskine Starke is one of the Judges of the High Court).
