BREACH WIDENED.

BY WELSH UNION’S DECISION. THE OFF-SIDE RULE. (Received Tuesday, 7.25 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. The Welsh Rugby Union’s decision has widened the breach with the Maoris. Although it permits the clubs to agree to the selection of a referee, it insists upon the use of the off-side rule to which, the Maoris object. It is expect■ed that the cancellation of the matches is now unavoidable, although thousands of tickets have been sold. Mr. Wray still hopes, however, that an amicable settlement will be reached. Recent games Have taken severe toll of the Maoris. J. Gemmell broke a small bone in his ankle at Lyons, and 8. Gemmell has water on the knee, the result of injuries received in the same game. A wound suffered by Barclay at Narbonne necessitated four stitches. W. Robinson suffered a slight concussion.—(A. and N.Z.)
