FOR THE BLIND.

SUCCESSFUL LOCAL CONCERT. Masterton responded well to the appeal for assistance for the inmates of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, the concert given last night being splendidly patronised. There was not a vacant seat in the Opera House, and the entertainment was one o? the inost successful ever staged in Masterton. The concert was organised by Masterton musicians, assited by a large band of workers keen to do something to alleviate the sufferings of less fortunate kinsmen, and their efforts met just reward. It is anticipated that th?? net proceeds will approximate fthd this will be forwarded to the Institute authorities to swell a fund founded to purchase musical instruments and provide tuition for the afflicted inmates.

The committee responsible for arranging the concert secured the very best of Wairarapa talent, and they were ably assisted by four accomplished performers from Wellington. Prior to the conclusion of the programme, Dr. G. H. Uttley on behalf of the organisers of the concert, explained to the audience the channel through which the funds would be transmitted. He thanked the performers for giving their services gratis, the members of the committee, the public for their support, and the Press for generous publicity. The contributors to the programme were as follows: instrumental quartette, Miss Holmwood, Messrs A. B. Wallace, H. W. Slater, and E. Larsen; humorous recitation, Miss Effie Brice (Wellington); skipping dance, Miss Mavis Boon (Wellington); Scotch comedian, Master Charles Stewart (Wellington) ; vocal solo, Master Kenneth Henshaw; toe dance, Margaret Jenkins; recitation, Miss Mary Hart; pianoforte solo, Miss M. Holmwood; magic and sleight of hand, “Zara;” Maori Poi Dance, the Tinopai Party; monologue, Miss McDonald (Wellington); dance, Miss Patty Payne; part singing, Wairarapa High School choir; vocal solo, Mr. T. Vaughan. The overture to the second half was played by the Masterton Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. J. Noble.

Miss V. Hampton acted as accompaniste, and Mr. T. Vaughan was stage manager. The piano was kindlyslrtit by the Arts and Crafts.
