A SHOT IN THE DARK.
STRANGE AFFAIR, NEAR PUKEKOHE. UNKNOWN ASSAILANT STILL AT LARGE. AUCKLAND, August 11. —An extraordinary affair occurred at the soldiers’ settlement at Puni, near Pukekohe, at about one o’clock this morning, Mervyn Hoe, eighteen years of age, being shot by an unknown assailant. The bullet penetrated his body fairly high up on the left side of the chest and caused a serious would. The victim'was engaged in home; work till after midnight. He then went out for a short walk before retiring. When about one hundred yards from the house he suddenly noticed the outline of a man and felt something pressed against his followed by a concussion. He reeled and staggered back to the house where he informed his brother. The doctor’s examination showed that the bullet must have passed within a fraction of an inch of the heart. Two constables searched the vicinity on arrival shortly after daybreak, but no trace of the assailant was found. The victim and his brother are unable to give any indication as to who he might be or why he fired the shot. It is r.ot expected that his wound will orove fatal.—(P.A.).
