ROSE IN EUROPE
A LAPSE INTO POOR FORM. DOES NOT MIND DEFEAT. BUT FEELS COULD NOT DO JUSTICE TO HIS COUNTRY. A message from Mr McHoia, transmitted through the High Commission*!, gives interesting details •f R. A. Rose’s recent experiences in Europe. The message makes it clear that there is no prospest of the New Zealand nuinor regaining his best form until he has bad a good iest. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 7.—Sir James Parr (jNew Zealand High Commissioner) learns frem McHelm at Oslo that Rose, after leaving Paris, where he put up good time, went to Rotterdam, Basing there on July 18. He started well, bat three laps from the finish gave up owing to pains in his muscles and giving ewery indication of collapse. A doctor diagnosed influenza. When Bose was able to leave his bed he was as weak as a kitten. He san at Oslo on July 30 against Eloff, who is a good man, but Bose could not carry on. He went to Copenhagen and raced against the celebrated Dr Peltzer on August 1. Rose gave up half-way through. He won a steeplechase later against poor opposition. McHolm, after consultation with Rose, came to the conclusion that it would be worse than useless in the latter’s present condition to meet Nurmi. Rose does not mind the risk of defeat, but feels it would be unsporting to his country, to run when he
is unlikely to be able to finish. Therefore he is returning to London on August 21, aud thence to New Zealand. McHolm adds that Rose would not regain form without a good rest, perhaps for a and N.Z.)
