SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age” Special.) Earthquake. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt in Carterton yesterday afternoon at 3.25. Church Services. Tho Bev. Trevor Skey, of Rotorua, conducted the services at St. Mark's Church, Carterton, on Sunday. Fire Insurance. From the first of January, a portion of the town of Carterton for fire rating purposes, has been reduced from F tariff to E tariff. The affected boundary is the borough on tho north, a short distance beyond Moreton road in tho south. GREYTOWN. (“The Age” Special.) New Year. While Wellingtonians revelled noisily and residents of Hastings saw thunderbolts and strange lights and Aucklanders a greeu moon as the old year passed, residents of Featherston and Greytown, more quietly welcomed the birth of 1926, fanners fervently hoping for rain and racing enthusiasts for sunshine at Tauherenikau. Fruit. The continued fine weather is having a detrimental effect on fruit. The growth of apples is being retarded, while raspberries are affected by tho heat. There is a small yield of stone fruit about Greytown this season. Visitors. Mr A. S. Esam (Public Trust Office, Wellington) and Mrs Esam are the guests of Mr and Mrs Allan Donald (Featherston). * Mr J. J. Corry (Blenheim), and Mr A. F. Lawrie , (Gisborne), whose horses Vi,vo and Serenade were winners, were visitors at Tauherenikau.

Rifle Shooting. Greytown Rifle Club was represented at Trentham by Messrs H. C. Trotman, T. P. Nichols, H. Feast, J. B. Bairetow -and C. Teal, a strong team, and they returned with a good shore of the prize money. Mr C. J. Nix (Featherston), was in great form winning two matches (300 yds and 500 yds) in. succession with the fine score of 48 in each. Veteran Bowlers.

Two teams, one from Masterton Park and one from Masterton Club, have accepted the Veteran Greytown Bowling Fours’ Challenge. The Park team will play the first contest at Greytown next Saturday, when other Park rinks will also be the guests of the Greytown Club. Fish.

Some good catches of perch were made by Greytown anglers during the week end. One or two phenomenal catches by picnickers wore reported during tho holidays, but sceptical old fishermen reply that the weather is hot and the season festive. Personal.

Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., of Wellington, and Mrs Riddell were the guests of Mr and Mrs Quentin Donald at the New Year.

Mr E. G. Thomas of the Greytown District High School staff is visiting Taranaki and Mrs J. F. Wallis, with her daughter and Miss L. Allen are holiday making at Levin. Mr Ray Keltic, a promising junior footballer, has accepted a position with a firm of jewellers in Palmerston North.

Municipal Band. The Greytown Municipal Band after rendering selections in Grey- 1 town on New Year’ Eve proceeded to Featherston where they were hospitably received by residents there.
