SECOND IN TEN DAYS. RBOLONGED TREMOR IN ■ MASTERTON. FELT THROUGHOUT THE DOMINION. A prolonged earth tremor was experienced in Masterton at 3.33 p.m. yesterday. The shake was of an even char- ' acter, and not so severe as that felt on Christmas Eve. It was of sufficient duration, however, to alarm many people, who made hurried exits into the open. The Wellington visitation is described as being very severe. The town was full of shoppers «v the tune replenishing their stores after the New Year holidays, and Queen street was quickly filled with those preferring the open. No damage is reported. WELLINGTON, Jan 4—A very sharp {earthquake was experienced: in We 1 - lington to-day at 3.33 p.m. It- is estimated to be one of the worst expen jenced for 20 years. ’• It lasted from 10 to 15 seconds, fthere were two distinct movements, a mild shake serving as an introduc-. lion to a violent tremor. High buildings on Lhmbton Quay, Featherston street, Jervois Quay and jother quarters on reclaimed land were visibly rocked by the ’quake. Wori rs on the top of the General Post O. ice had an unpleasant expedience as the huge building showed considerable movement. The ground floor, iceiling tracked in the sorting office and in other places plaster fell to the Moor. In the State Fire buildings the fehake caused some alarm. Pillars on the ground floor vibrated with the Shock and hanging lamps swayed for pome time. , The records of the Government Seismologist (Dr. Adams) will not be available until to-morrow. —(P.A.)
