BUSH FIRES IN VICTORIA.

MELBOURNE ENVELOPED IN SMOKE. HEAVY DAMAGE REPORTED. (Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 3.—The city is enveloped in a dense haze from bush fires raging in the Tynong, Garfield and Berwick districts. The Gippsland fires commenced on Thursday and extended until within 34 miles of Melbourne. At one time Tynong was in danger of being enveloped. The fires caused a weird effect in the city, the smoke being blown right across the sun, which, through the haze presented a deep orange colour. Heavy damage has been caused.— (P.A.)
