AUCKLAND MAKE 333. OTAGO MAKE A BETTER EFFORT WELLINGTON, Jan. 3.—The match, between Auckland and Otago was continued in fine weather and an easy wicket. Auckland carried their overnight score to 333 by slow and unenterprising batting, the morning play realising only 81 runs. The outstanding feature was the fine bowling of Torrance who sent down 42 overs of which 11 were maidens and took seven wickets for 90 runs. Otago's second innings was a great improvement on the first. The score stood at 209 for three wickets when stumps were drawn. Scores:— Otago, first innings 131. Second innings 3 for 209 (Cherry 32, AUoo 33, Blamires in 63, Zeimmerman in 75). Auckland 333 (Horspool 64, Mills 59, Sneddon 36, Smith 63, Cooper in 26). Bowling: Torrance 7/90, Douglas 1/58, Conradi 1/84).—(P.A.) WELLINGTON BEAT CANTERBURY. AN INNINGS THRASHING. McGIRR AND BADCOCK DEADLY WITH BALL. WELLINGTON, Jan. 3.—Wellington beat Canterbury by an innings and 332 runs. When time was called on Friday Wellington had lost 9 wickets for 494 runs. Brice (17) and Banks (30) resumed to the bowling of MeEwin. Brice added 3 to his score and when attempting to lift MeEwin out of the ground was caught by Talbot. Canterbury’s innings was remarkable. Though the wicket was in every way favourable to the bowlers, the only Canterbury batsman to make double figures was Gasson who made 17. The innings closed for 37. None of the others made more than five. The bowling of McGirr and Badcock was deadly, the averages being McGirr 5/17, Badcock 5/18. In their second attempt Canterbury did better, but it was still a poor display. This time the total was 128, Gasson again top scorer with 27, Gregory 21, Page 21, Woods 17. Badcock’s bowling average was 5/42 and Brice’s 4/13. The visitors go on to Auckland to-morrow. —(P.A.)
