THE SECURITY PACT.
GERMANY WILL COME IN. . UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. BERLIN, July 16. —Strict secrecy is observed as to the German reply, but the newspapers assert that Germany is ready to join the League on conditions, respecting the right to march across Germany and the evacuation of the occupied areas. Th£ reply emphasises that Germany is greatly interested in the a*«eleration of the security question. General Smuts’s Warning. CAPETOWN, July 16.—1 n the Assembly, General Smuts said his word of warning was this, if British statesmen at this stage disassociated themselves from the Union and entere 1 into a Security Paet on their own, they would introduce a wedge and might cut the heart out of the Empire. Several Dominions were unlikely to adhere to any Security Pact, and would follow a policy of. their-own.— (A. and N.Z.)
