ST. MATTHEW’S PARISH.
ANNUAL PARISHIONERS’ MEETING. The annual mooting of parishioners of St. Matthew’s parish was held last evening, there being a large attendance, presided over by the Vicar (the Rev. W. Bullock.) The report (already published in ‘‘The Age”) and balance sheet were adopted.
In moving the adoption, Dr. A. Hosking (warden) said that they should endeavour to raise £2OO this year towards repayment of the £lBOO loan on the Parish Hall. It would be a little over three years before the cost of electric light would be paid off, but the lighting was much cheaper than gas. Regarding heating the church, probably a screen at the back would be an improvement. Mr Bullock said that such a screen could be made an object of beauty. They were not unknown in churches at Home. Regarding the Melanesian Mission they were shortly having a moving picture entertainment, which would assist. The system of financing the assistant clergy fund was in need of reform. To Mr C. Perry, the Vicar said all the rents from church aero, (on corner of Queen and Church streets) were devoted to interest and repayment of the mortgage on the church. This would expire in 1930. Then it would be decided by the Synod what amounts would go to Tinui, Masterton and Eketahuna. The section was left to the original parish of Masterton, which included those districts.
In his own report, the Vicar said that it was three years since he had taken charge, and he felt a mixed sense of humility owing to things left undone and of gratitude for work accomplished. Mr Gibson had ably assisted with the work of the parish. He had much endeared himself to all. A hearty welcome would be given to the Rev. J. H. Datson, who had decided to join the ministry. Thanks were also duo to the hon. secretary (Mr T. T. Denbee), the treasurer (Mr H. B. Dyer), the auditors, vestrymen and all others who had assisted in the work of the Parish. A big effort should be made to establish an Anglican Boy’s Home in the Wairarapa. The Revs. O. Gibson and J. H. Datson also spoke. Oflicers. After the Vicar had appointed Dr. Archer Hosking as his warden, the following officers were elected.—People’s warden, Mr L. B. Maunsell; veotrymen, Messrs E. Hale, W. Penistone, J. T. Williams, T .T. Denbee, G. Ball, T. R. Best, G. Hyde, W. McArtney, H. F. Green and E. H. Morton.
Votes ef thanks were passed to the auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and H. M. Boddington, who were re-elect-ed.
