SALVATION ARMY.
VISIT BY ENVOY SWABTZ. AN INTERESTING ADDRESS. At the Salvation Armjr Hall- yesterday afternoon, Envoy E. Pauline Swartz, of the United States, spoke to an appreciative audience on her travels through Palestine four years ago amPagain two years bacl». Three Palestine eostttmes, worn by comrades present, a bag made of a goat’s skin, similar to that used by David, and a sling were exhibited. The speaker said that Palestine was a most beautiful country, 150 miles long and from 45 to 23 miles wide. The population was less than 800,000. Over 400 varieties of flowers grew there. There were olive and orange groves and vifaeyards and vegetables grew in great profusion.
The audience followed Miss Swartz very closely as she gave a wonderful d- scription of her travels, through familiar locations and villages—Nazareth, (with its 1500 inhabitants)’, and the fountain on the outskirts of the town, which had been the only supply of water for many years; Cana of Galilee with the earthen vessels as used in Christ’s first miracle. The Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Jericho Bethlehem and Damascus and then Jerusalem, the great city with 80,000 people and a wall 38 feet high and 3 miles long, which surrounded the city in hiblical times. Forty times the city has been seized, 20 times partly and four times completely destroyed. The streets are rough, narrow, . irregular and dark because of the high buildings. The Chureh of St. Stephen, the pool of Bethsada, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the garden, of Gethsemane, the brook Kedron, the pool of Siloam and other places of interest were described. Outside the city wafl near a skull-shaped hill was a rock-cut tomb. Only one of the three burial niches had been occupied. By some, including General Gordon, this had been considered as the place of Crucifixion—Calvary. Miss Swartz spoke of the great changes in Palestine since Great Britain took control Both morning and evening services were well-attended; and Miss Swartz gave an address at each.
