FARMERS’ UNION.

MEETINGS IN BUSH DISTRICT. The Provincial secretary (Mr J. Watson) reports that a record meeting was held in Eketahuna on Thursday last when a considerable volume of business was dealt with. The combined cull cow drive was introduced and enthusiastically adopted. One member remarked that it was the best scheme ever introduced to the dairy farmer.

In conjunction with this scheme the Government Veterinary Surgeon (Mr T. A. Blake) is anxious to co-operate by identifying sterile cows and holding a post-mortem examination at the works with a view to discovering the causes thereof.

Among the remits to be presented to the forthcoming inter provincial conference to be held at Masterton in May was the need of the advancement of Agricultural Education by the establishment of an Agricultural College, with residential tutorial staff, student and research workers, and embracing the school of forestry; the continuous inspection of stock at sale yards from January 1 to June 30; and the rigid enforcement of the Noxious Weeds Act.

Following meetings were held -at Tiraumea and Alfredton where the questions of meteorological advice of approaching easterly storms with a view to saving newly shorn sheep; and allged excessive commissions charged by stock auctioneering firms were made subjects for remits to the Inter-provincial Conference. At a meeting at Tiraumea the secretary by request, occupied most of the evening by giving an address on the advantages of the Union and the necessity of closer organisation by farmers and was concluded by an address on insurances as affecting the farmers’ interests.
