SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age” Special.) A District Road. At this week’s meeting of the Featherston County Council, consideration will be given to a request that the Ahiakouka road be made a district road. Rifle Shooting. In the final shoot for Mr A. Matthew ’s trophy, also counting for the McTaggart and Wakely Cups, under the Featherston Rifle Club, T. Benton 267 was first, R. F. Watson 265 second, and W. Johnson 264 third. In the friendly match between the Greytown and Te Wharau Rifle Clubs at Te Wharau the visitors proved the winners by 58 points. The conditions were 10 shots al 500 yards and 7 at 600 yards, 11 men a-side. The best score of the day was put up by Rfm. H. Trotman 75 points for the visitors, and D. McCalmont 70 for the home team. Greytown.—H. C. Trotman 75, J. B. Bairstow 72, T. Orr 72, J. C. Feast 70, H. Walden 68, A. B. Balfour and W. Thomas 67, It Ingley 66, W. J. Feast 64, J. F. Thompson 59, and J. Parker 54, total 739. Bible Society. At the annual meeting of the Greytown branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society Mrs W. A. Tate was elected president, Mesdaines D. Mackenzie, G. Knowles Smith and G. K. Moir vice-presidents, and Miss York secretary and . treasurer. The Rev. Knowles Smith, who was personally acquainted with the Society’s London headquarters, gave an interesting address. Mrs Porter, organiser for the Wellington District Ladies’ Auxiliary, congratulated the branch upon last year’s effort (£26 4s fid), and urged the need for the increased Circulation of the Bible as the only remedy for the present revolt against morality and authority. The Bible Society has now printed the Bible in 566 languages, and issues 36,000 copies daily, the latest addition being a new translation into the Maori tongue.
Plunket Society. The Grey town Plunket Society’s nurse’s report for February showed: New cases 6; visits to office, adults 38, babies 45; visits to homes, 26; advice by telephone, 7; emulsion sold 21bs. Visits were made to Battersea. Ahiakouka and Papawai. Sewing Circle. The Rod Cross Sewing Circle, Greytown, presented Mrs G. McCracken with a travelling cushion on the occasion of her departure from Greytown.
Flower Show. The inmates of the Buchanan Home will be the guests of the Greytown Horticultural Society at their flower show next week, Oddfellows’ Conference.
At the annual conference of the Wellington District Manchester Unity ef Oddfellows, the following officers were elected:—District Grand Master, Bro. A. C. Blair; Deputy Grand Master, Bro. A.
